Land degradation is threatening Malawi’s food security
Agricultural authorities warn that Malawi could face worsening hunger unless farmers adopt better land-management practices.
Capital Radio Malawi reported that agricultural authorities warned that Malawi could face worsening hunger in coming years unless farmers adopt improved land-management practices that sustain soil and land productivity.
The issue links soil erosion, declining land productivity and food security, and complements TLC’s SAMALA work on catchment management, restoration and livelihood diversification. TLC reports average topsoil losses of 29 tonnes per hectare per year, and up to 100 tonnes on steep hillsides.
